Who we are
The Quaker Tapestry Museum is situated in a purpose designed Quaker Meeting House built in 1816. The museum displays the Quaker Tapestry, a beautiful brightly embroidered story with 77 panels showing much of the history of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) from 1652 until the present day. The Tapestry was created by more than 4,000 men, women and children in 15 countries and was completed in 1996. The Tapestry is an excellent resource for schools because it provides a visually stimulating insight into 350 years of social history through the eyes of the Quaker movement. The Tapestry illustrates Quaker events and insights and is a celebration of the significant contribution Quakers have made to the modern world. Stories from the forefront of the industrial revolution, developments in science and medicine, astronomy, the abolition of slavery, social reform and ecological issues are all revealed within the stunning needlework. The Tapestry is an excellent way for students to gain an insight into the perspectives of the Quakers at key points in history such as WWI and WWII when they actively protested against the Wars. Quakers today continue to work for peace. There are a wide range of activities for students including visits to the exhibition, embroidery activities, costumes, role play and sound guides. The museum is ideal for schools developing their own collaborative textile projects and looking to gain inspiration as well as understand design and embroidery skills and techniques. The Meeting House building and the Tapestry Exhibition are also useful for schools studying and comparing different religions. The museum is located in close proximity to two other churches which provides a useful contrast. The museum encourages visits from both primary and secondary schools. A visit to the museum can support: History, Art and Design, Religious Education and Citizenship within the curriculum. They are keen to liaise with teachers in advance so that activities can be tailored to the needs of the school. There are charges for school visits.
