Who we are

The Tate Liverpool , situated in the Albert Dock on Liverpool’s historic waterfront is home to the National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art and is one of four Tate galleries in the UK. It has an internationally recognised permanent collection and special exhibitions that draw local, national and international audiences. The special exhibitions change regularly and are drawn from innovative and cutting edge local, national, and internationally renowned artists. This year the Collection is due to be completely rehung around the theme of Constellations. This will showcase major artists from the Collection while introducing new artists and helping visitors to make new connections between artists over time. A visit to Tate Liverpool creates an alternative learning environment. Visitors are encouraged to engage with works of great modern and cutting edge contemporary artists ‘in the flesh’ and be part of a unique learning experience outside the classroom. The Tate Learning team encourage reflective practice and support the professional development of teachers and student teachers to use open questioning techniques and to encourage pupils to engage in open dialogue with their peers to support pupils understanding of the art work, offering pupils and staff the opportunity for different ways of looking at the world. Much of the practice developed at Tate Liverpool is underpinned by academic and action research. ARTDOCK is a suite of spaces on the first Floor with a Learning Studio, Study Space and Family activity space. Visitors are allowed to use dry art equipment in the gallery. The Tate Learning team are very accessible and responsive and are always keen to work with teachers to ensure the best possible visit for your school. There are also extensive online resources available to support your visit. Entry to the collection is free; there is a charge for most special exhibitions. Teachers wishing to research the special exhibitions for a group visit can have free entry by appointment. Tate Collective, the gallery’s youth programme offers a range of opportunities for young people to get involved in the life of the gallery, meet new people, learn new skills and develop events for and with their peers. Tate Collective also run Future Tate, a monthly art club for younger people 11-14 yrs where they can meet new people, learn more about the art in the gallery, think about and share their own ideas, and have a lot of fun taking part in young people led interactive workshops. Tate Collective and Future Tate are open to all young people.
