Who we are
Swarthmoor Hall is a 16th century country house set in beautiful gardens and grounds in 130 acres of farmland. It has a special story to tell, one which has particular significance for Quakers. Swarthmoor Hall provides educational half day visits for schools on the themes of History and Religious Education. The History Workshop is appropriate for KS1 and 2 and is a hands-on interactive programme of activities about 17th century history. Children have the opportunity to; tour the historic house; compare old artefacts with their modern day equivalents; try out 17th century games and activities; meet and interview a 17th century character, Margaret Fell; and bring and eat a 17th century packed lunch. The Hall also provides a Religious Education Workshop. This is more suitable for KS2 and it involves exploring the Quaker Tapestry, Quaker principles in today’s world, creating a piece of artwork based on the tapestry panels and interviewing the 17th century Quaker celebrity Margaret Fell. Children also tour the historic rooms and take part in a true or false quiz to see what they have learnt. “A super morning, thank you so much. It was exactly matched to the age of the children, activities were hands on and good fun. The tour was informative and child friendly, the focus on life in the past was just what we asked for. The hot-seating gave just the right amount of information to keep the children engaged. Very impressed with the whole experience”. Primary teacher
