Who we are

Sizergh Castle is a beautiful medieval house set within extensive gardens managed by the National Trust. It was originally built in the Middle Ages by the Strickland family, who still live there. The imposing house stands proud at the gateway to the Lake District and has dramatic viewpoints over Morecambe Bay and the Lake District fells. The castle contains portraits, fine furniture and ceramics which have been accumulated over centuries by the family and are mingled with the family’s more recent photographs. The garden includes two lakes, a rock garden, kitchen garden and picnic areas. The wider estate has an orienteering course, a bird hide and various public footpaths. Sizergh welcomes schools who book ahead to take part in self-guided visits to the castle, gardens and estate. Volunteers may be available on request for school talks on the history of the castle and groups can arrange for children to try on Tudor costumes and use quiz sheets.
