Who we are

Quarry Bank Mill is one of Britain’s greatest Industrial Heritage sites showing how a complete industrial community would have lived. Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate has the unique advantage of showing a working mill within its context, illustrating the working and domestic lives of the workers in the mill. This site offers a fully rounded exploration of industrial life. The site features the mill itself, which visitors can see in full working order. Styal Village, built for the mill workers by the Greg family offers evidence of how the workers would have lived. The Apprentice House was home to the pauper children who worked in the mill and is a recreated home where visitors can experience life in the past. The gardens and estate property around the mill can also be explored in learning about ecology and the environment. Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate has a large education offer with tours and sessions available for children and young people from Key Stage One up to Further Education. Sessions are available exploring historical themes such as Victorian Working Life, Toys and Games and a Day in the Life of an Apprentice, as well as a wealth of sessions covering topics in Science, Geography and Art and Design. Tours and sessions can also be tailored to specific needs, such as forming part of GCSE controlled assessments. Detailed outlines of the workshop programmes available can be downloaded from the website.
