Who we are
The Watermill at Little Salkeld is one of the few remaining working mills producing stoneground flour in the traditional way using the clean and self-renewing power of water. During a school visit children get the opportunity to see the mechanics of the fully working mill, grinding and bagging flour and hoisting sacks. Visits involve discussions with mill staff and hands on activities such as grinding flour using a hand mill and bread making. Children can really get the feel of making dough and smelling and tasting the bread as well as learning all about the different types of grain and flour. The mill also has its own small holding and children enjoy seeing the hens, ducks, goats and sheep as well as having the option of taking a walk up the mill race. A visit to the mill provides schools with a stimulating, hands on and sensory real life experience which relates to popular school topics such as harvest time, local heritage, renewable energy and food production. It can support primary and secondary schools in the main curriculum areas of History and Science. The mill is happy to tailor the school visit to the needs of the school and topics being covered.
