Who we are
The ancestral home of the famous furniture-making Gillow family, Leighton Hall prides itself on “no stuffy museum visits here” and no roped-off areas. It is a beautiful late 18th century hall that is still lived in by the Gillows family today, surrounded by acres of parkland. There are few places that offer every school visit during May to September a chance to see birds of prey fly, a little extra that adds to the lovely character of this quirky place. Schools can study Key Stage 1 and 2 history, geography and science with taught sessions, object-handling, role play as well as outdoor trails in the ‘Countryside Classroom’ with activities as varied as making aboriginal map-sticks and field-sketching. The ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ session contracts Victorian children’s lives of the family with those of the servants, and ‘Houses and Homes’ looks at different buildings and how they have developed into homes. Leighton Hall offers fun and variety with lots of resources and info available to teachers in advance – with a Bird of Prey thrown in for good measure!
