Who we are

Founded in 1796, Kendal Museum is one of the oldest museums in the UK. The museum exhibitions cover a wide range of topics including archeology, local history and geology. Pupils can follow a nature trail that began 520 million years ago, discover how the Lake District was formed and learn about the plants and animals that live in the lakeland habitats. They can see the amazing objects left behind by the people who lived here thousands of years ago and find out how people in Roman Britain cooked, worshipped and fought, what they ate and what they wore. From Ancient Egyptian artifacts through to fascinating objects representing local industries, education, crime and punishment - Kendal Museum has something to interest everyone. The museum provides a variety of services for schools and education groups including free visits for all self-led school visits as long as they are pre booked. Teachers can make the museum a learning space for the delivery of the whole curriculum. • Workshops with museum educational staff • Workshops adapted to your schools needs Schools can also book workshops with museum educational staff, for which a charge does apply. These workshops are mainly geared towards Key Stage 2 pupils; however, the museum is happy to develop activity for other Key Stage groups. Popular sessions include: Prehistory, Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Vikings, Tudors, Archaeology, Habitats, Underground, Bones and Skeletons and Stuff of Planets. There are also loan boxes available for rent on a half termly basis, books available for children and schools can use the museum lodge for picnics, subject to availability.
