Who we are

Hoghton Tower is the ancestral home of the de Hoghton family, who have lived here since the Norman Conquest, and has been visited by King James I, William Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens. The fortified hill-top manor house sits at the end of a mile-long driveway and has spectacular views. It provides a memorable experience of a Tudor/Elizabethan baronial home and is reputedly the third most-haunted house in Britain. School tours are welcome all year round with role-play participation and an emphasis on fun. The Tour is led by experienced guides who will show pupils how to bow to the King, dance a jig, guard the ramparts, be courtly in the courtyard, knight a steak, walk the walk through the underground passages, ride a horse up the stairs, drop a coin down the ancient well, avoid the Lancashire Witch’s Evil Eye, spy on the dolls in their miniature houses, find the priests’ hiding hole, and dodge the dungeons. The Lawn is perfect for picnics and in the event of rain, meals can be taken indoors. “This was our first visit but definitely won't be our last. Fantastic learning experience in a beautiful environment” KS1 School Trip “The people who led the tours were really well suited for our age group, very enthusiastic and warm in personality. It was a brilliant day out and the children really enjoyed themselves. We will be visiting again next year. I would definitely recommend Hoghton Tower to schools.” KS2 Trip
