Who we are
Heron Corn Mill sits on the banks of the river Bela in Beetham South Cumbria. It is one of the few working mills in the area. It is a fascinating place to visit and has been a base for local industry powered by renewable energy for over 900 years. A newly installed 100kW hydropower Kaplan turbine generates electricity providing energy for the visitor attraction, a local factory and the national grid. A fourteen-foot high Victorian waterwheel powers all the industrial heritage mill machinery. The Mill provides schools with an opportunity to explore the local history of the area, experience and compare old and new green technologies and participate in creative arts activities. The Mill’s activities and workshops mainly support History, Art, Geography and Science in the Curriculum. They welcome both primary and secondary schools. As well as the regular programme of activities on offer, the mill is also involved in a number of partnership projects with schools. Heron Corn Mill is currently being redeveloped and a new exhibition and visitor centre will be open in 2014. Workshops for schools will still be available in the Barn while the site is under development.
