All rise: Water Primary School take a trip to court
Posted: 07/03/2017
The group recently took part in a legal education workshop with charity the National Centre for Citizenship and the Law (NCCL). The activity took place at the Greater Manchester Police Museum using their historic 1895 Magistrates’ Courtroom.
The aim of the visit was for pupils to learn more about the history of crime and punishment through time. During the visit, the group participated in a contemporary courtroom workshop and re-enacted a robbery case. Pupils also explored the Museum and its impressive collection relating to the history of policing in the Greater Manchester area.
Lizzy McKay, Assistant Headteacher said: “The best bit of the day was when they got to role play in the court, they loved being in role as a barrister or even the judge (they even enjoyed playing the defendant!) The role play was current and thought provoking and inspired a great debate... The day was exciting, fun and factual… The whole day really brought to life the topic of crime and punishment and at Water we always try to excite and engage our children to ensure they are receiving the highest quality of education-the trip really didn't disappoint in this.”
NCCL deliver legal education workshops in courtrooms across the UK including Manchester and the North West, working with groups of all ages. These courtroom workshops introduce young people to the law and how to live within it, providing an opportunity to learn more about the courts and the different careers within the legal system. Workshops enable people to gain a practical understanding of the law and justice system and its related history, so that they can be inspired by their rights and responsibilities, to play an active role in society.
The History of Crime and Punishment is delivered by the National Centre for Citizenship and the Law in partnership with the Greater Manchester Police Museum and must be pre-booked.
